(A)CRYPSIS ACADEMY BLACK DIAMOND LEOPARD VARSITY SHORTS
Just as the name (A)CRYPSIS itself represents the idea of “camouflage,” this time we reworked the leopard pattern.
Instead of using the familiar browns, yellows, and strong contrasts traditionally associated with leopard print, we concealed the pattern within black.
By layering different depths of black, varying levels of sheen, and fine granular textures, we created a surface reminiscent of black diamonds and raw mineral stone.
From a distance, it appears almost entirely black.
Only when viewed up close, or when light hits the fabric from different angles, does the leopard pattern hidden within the surface gradually emerge.
Our intention was not to create a louder or more obvious leopard print.
We wanted to create a pattern that reveals itself only through observation.
This is the central idea behind DIAMOND CRYPSIS.
The silhouette continues the Beach Shorts shape we have always favored.
Loose and lightweight, it maintains the freedom of movement expected from summer shorts while remaining easy to integrate into everyday wear.
Building on the Black Diamond Leopard base, we introduced the Varsity Letter element drawn from American collegiate sportswear.
Varsity lettering traditionally relies on bold, contrasting colors. This time, we pushed the entire element into black.
The letter is constructed in dimensional Chenille embroidery. Rather than relying on color contrast, its form emerges through the height, texture, shadow, and sheen of the yarn against the black leopard surface.
Beneath the “A,” graphic lines reminiscent of gemstone settings are also retained.
Even though every element exists within a closely related spectrum of black, the flat print, graphic lines, and dimensional Chenille create distinct surface layers through differences in material and texture.
At the waist, two contrasting drawcord systems are deliberately placed together:
BLACK COTTON TAPE × TECHNICAL CLIMBING CORD
One is a wide black cotton tape.
The other is a black climbing cord with subtle white detailing.
The end of the climbing cord is finished with a black sealed coating.
One comes from traditional garment construction.
The other comes from technical outdoor equipment.
We placed these two materials from different systems into a single waistband construction, turning even the most basic drawcord into a detail worth noticing at close range.
The back is intentionally kept relatively clean.
The Black Diamond Leopard pattern extends across the entire back, with only a white (A)crypsis® main label placed on the back pocket.
Within an almost entirely black structure, this small piece of white becomes the most direct signal of identity.
Leopard.
Chenille.
Cotton tape.
Climbing cord.
Brand label.
The intention was never to simply add more decoration to a pair of shorts.
Instead, we wanted to ask:
How many different layers can exist within the same black?
